Your budget will partly dictate the style of the ceremony and the reception, however the style of dress, number of guests and the type of meal served at the reception will be important indicators. There are no hard, fast rules but the following traditional definitions have been taken from from Genevieve Morgan's: The Wedding Planner (Chronicle, 1995).
Tradition abounds at formal wedding ceremonies, which usually take place in a church or synagogue. The reception is large, usually more than 200 guests, and dressy, and features a full bar and buffet or sit down lunch or dinner. It is often held at a club, large home or fancy hotel. The bride wears a full-length gown with a train and veil and the groom wears a morning suit.
The ceremony is less traditional, with flexibility in the marriage vows. It can be held in a place of worship or at a home, garden, club or hotel. The medium size reception is 75 to 200 guests and usually has a buffet meal with a soft bar served at any time of day. The bride often wears a long gown and veil; the groom dresses in black tie, suit or jacket and tie.
The key words are small, usually under 75 guests and simple. The ceremony is held in a home or garden or at the City Hall. The reception features snacks, hors d'oeuvres or a one course buffet, with cake and champagne following. The bride wears a dress or suit of any color and length, and the groom wears a suit or jacket of choice.
In addition to churches, synagogues, private homes, hotels, gardens, restaurants, banquet rooms, catering halls, city halls and judges chambers, there are many other places that the innovative couple can marry. Country clubs often rent space, even if you're not a member. The golf enthusiast might enjoy being married on a golf course. Your college chapel might hold special memories for you or the football field. You may enjoy getting married afloat. There are many yachts equipped for weddings and receptions but shop around. If you need to hire a separate caterer, be sure they have cruise experience. Service afloat holds special challenges. Ceremonies for two are also available aboard honeymoon cruise ships and the package may include the honeymoon destination. Again, shop around. The Napa valley is a wonderful setting for those in northern California but throughout the country there are wineries, historic buildings, galleries or museums that may be willing to rent space for your wedding. Be innovative, express your individuality and do what makes you comfortable. This is one of the most important days of your life.
