To ensure safe use of essential oils please understand the following:
- Essential oils are highly concentrated and should be deluted in a
carrier oil before being applied to the skin. Some of the common carrier
oils are sweet almond, apricot kernel, avocado, flaxseed, hazelnut, jojoba,
sesame, sunflower and walnut. There are others but these are tsome of he
most common.
- It is always a good idea to test for an allergic reaction before using
essential oils. Rub a drop of carrier oil on the upper chest area and wait
12 hours checking for redness or other skin reactions. If none occur sthen
place 1 drop of the essential oil ,deluted in 16 drops of the carrier oil,
onto the upper chest area and wait another 12 hours. If no skin irrittion
occurs both the carrier and essential oil can be used.
- Only pure essential oils and pure unrefined carrier oils sould be used.
- Some oils like that of sweet basil, bergamot, connamon leaf, clove,
grapefruit, lemon, lemon-grass, lime, orange, peppermint and spearmint may
irritate the skin. If such an irritation occurs, apply lavender oil or another
carrier oil to the affected area. If the skin is sensitive to essential
oils, the formulas can be reduced to half strength and still remain affective.
- You may apply essential oils to the skin using a spray mmist or by adding
them to your bath. Be careful not to get the vapors into your eyes and if
they do become irritated immediately flush them with cool water.
- Use of essential oils should be done with caution during pregnance as
some oils thave a stimulating effect on the uterus. Small amounts of bergamot,
coriander, cypress, frankincense, geranium, ginger, grapefruit, lavender,
lemon, lime, mandeline, orange, patchouli, sandalwood, spearmint, tea tree
and ylang-ylang are some of the oils that can be used without danger and
are of significant benifiit.
- Do not consume alcohol, except a small amount of wine with a meal when
using essential oils.
- Do not use essential oils while on medication as the oils might interfere
with the medicine.
- Avoid sunbathing, saunas and hot baths after using citrus oild to prevent
skin damage.
